“Oh, the unspeakable greatness of that exchange,—the Sinless One is condemned, and he who is guilty goes free; the Blessing bears the curse, and the cursed is brought into blessing; the Life dies, and the dead live; the Glory is whelmed in darkness, and he who knew nothing but confusion of face is clothed with glory.”

Mercy by nature, justice by necessity

In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased Him that there was no judgment…. For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke. According to their deeds, accordingly He will repay, fury to His adversaries, recompence to His enemies; to the islands He will repay recompence.” (Isa. 59:13-15,17,18).

For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, He shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that He may do His work, His strange work; and bring to pass His act, His strange act.” (Isa. 28:21).

The above photo reveals the intensity of love between the Father and Son Godhead. Even though females are pictured here, that does not detract, rather it magnifies the affection between Them who created heaven and earth. In scripture many females represented the Son, who represented His Father. Sacrificial offerings were both males and females. The red heifer, a female, slain and burned to ash is the greatest representation of the intensity of our Fathers wrath that Jesus took for our sakes. But, His willing sacrifice made Him the perfect intercessor-mediating High Priest. The Father made His own infinitely perfect Priest to advocate between Himself and His fallen children. Nothing is more pure and immaculate than a spotless lamb burned to ash, Jesus Christ our Lord.

In Christ we see His Father and understand His Fathergovernment. The mercy of the Father comes naturally. His justice comes for the protection of His mercy throughout His universe. This we see in the picture of the soldier mother and her daughter. As the two year old is very happy to be back in her mother’s embrace, yet infinitely more so was the mother to be providing the embrace, so had the great Father and His only Begotten. Especially more so was He happy to have His dear Child again when He returned to His yearning Father after Their separation for three days and the difficult mission the Son accomplished for the strengthening of the kingdom.

No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him.” (John 1:18).

The Son who had always been in the bosom of His Father was once again in His bosom. And ever would remain, to the thralldom of the hosts of redeemed angelic and human hosts. The whole family of heaven and earth will thrill to no end because of the great things They did in the great controversy between Christ and Satan.

And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;

Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped Him that liveth for ever and ever.” (Rev. 5:9-14).

They both proved that the Father’s mercy is by nature and His justice is by necessity.

I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known Thy faithfulness to all generations.  For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: Thy faithfulness shalt Thou establish in the very heavens.” (Psa. 89:1,2).

Very thoughtful, David! I like the quote from Isaiah. Daniel D. Lelong
