Love begets love, the two great commandments
Love, as an experience
instead of as a theory, makes the difference between the true Christian and the
wrong Christian. But, what were Christ’s disciples like? I think they were on
the way to being true Christians, and Jesus was patient with them and kept testing
them. How patient and gentle was Jesus with Nicodemus the Pharisee! So, Jesus
gave us the example to be gentle and patient with believers who fall short of
being the fully mature Christian. They will be won over by our carefulness with
them.
Even the two great
commandments can be claimed by those who only have the theory of love. They are
sure they are obeying the commandment. But because they are blind to their
condition or ignorant of real love, they get ostracized by the church. So, so
many in the church have never known love during their life. How can they
conceptualize what they never experienced?
We all bring baggage when we
join the people of God. Many don’t pass through the floods and the fire like
you did before they join. And so they really don’t have such a solid connection
with Jesus as a result. But something is pulling them into the church! It must
be Jesus patiently working with their hearts. Let’s all be mindful of this. And
I’m sure you are. When we slip up and treat these brethren or sisters roughly,
let’s go back quickly and humbly ask forgiveness. When we roughly treat the
least of Jesus’ brethren we greatly displeased Him. Hopefully we haven’t done
so much damage that they won’t be utterly destroyed by us and never be seen
again. Sometimes it doesn’t take much. “If any man offend not in word, the same
is a perfect man.” (Jas. 3:2). We need more perfect men and women of God.
