Hebrews chapter eleven
Heb 11:1 Now faith is
the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Heb 11:2 For by it
the elders obtained a good report.
Heb 11:3 Through
faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that
things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Heb 11:4 By faith
Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he
obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it
he being dead yet speaketh.
Heb 11:5 By faith
Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because
God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that
he pleased God.
Heb 11:6 But without
faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe
that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Heb 11:7 By faith
Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared
an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and
became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
Heb 11:8 By faith
Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive
for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
Heb 11:9 By faith he
sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in
tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
Heb 11:10 For he
looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Heb 11:11 Through
faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered
of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had
promised.
Heb 11:12 Therefore
sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the
sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
Heb 11:13 These all
died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off,
and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were
strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Heb 11:14 For they
that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
Heb 11:15 And truly,
if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might
have had opportunity to have returned.
Heb 11:16 But now
they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not
ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Heb 11:17 By faith
Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the
promises offered up his only begotten son,
Heb 11:18 Of whom it
was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
Heb 11:19 Accounting
that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he
received him in a figure.
Heb 11:20 By faith
Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
Heb 11:21 By faith
Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped,
leaning upon the top of his staff.
Heb 11:22 By faith
Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel;
and gave commandment concerning his bones.
Heb 11:23 By faith
Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw
he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
Heb 11:24 By faith
Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's
daughter;
Heb 11:25 Choosing
rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures
of sin for a season;
Heb 11:26 Esteeming
the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had
respect unto the recompence of the reward.
Heb 11:27 By faith he
forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him
who is invisible.
Heb 11:28 Through
faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed
the firstborn should touch them.
Heb 11:29 By faith they
passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do
were drowned.
Heb 11:30 By faith
the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.
Heb 11:31 By faith
the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had
received the spies with peace.
Heb 11:32 And what
shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak,
and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
Heb 11:33 Who through
faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the
mouths of lions,
Heb 11:34 Quenched
the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made
strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Heb 11:35 Women
received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not
accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
Heb 11:36 And others
had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and
imprisonment:
Heb 11:37 They were
stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they
wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted,
tormented;
Heb 11:38 (Of whom
the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in
dens and caves of the earth.
Heb 11:39 And these
all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
Heb 11:40 God having
provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made
perfect.
Faith!!! The epistle to the Hebrews is not only about theology.
Faith must have an object. A chair? I used to hear that
faith is believing that my chair won’t collapse when I sit on it. That is a
very flawed example! It rivals the old covenant with its imperfect, limited
shadows of eternal things. Faith must have a person as the object. Now we’re
getting somewhere! That person is the Son of God, the faithful, trustworthy Son
of God. He makes promises that He guarantees when the reasonable conditions are
met that He placed on them. Do we love Him with our whole heart, or do we love
His gifts more than their Giver? Are we only pretending to love Him the most?
There is no fooling God. “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of
trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him.” (Nah. 1:7). He expects faith
in Him to be unadulterated by a partial trust in ourselves or in Satan.
“Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in
man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not
see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in
a salt land and not inhabited.
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope
the LORD is.
For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that
spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but
her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought,
neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” (Jer. 17:5-8).
“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” (1Jn. 5:4).
By faith Jesus overcame Satan and all that he could bring
against the Creator. “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without
wavering; (for He is faithful that promised.)” (Heb. 10:23).
“Through faith also Sara herself received strength to
conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she
judged Him faithful who had promised.” (Heb. 11:11).
“Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it.” (1Thess.
5:24).
“But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep
you from evil.” (2Thess. 3:3).
“Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly
calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Who was faithful to Him that appointed Him, as also Moses
was faithful in all his house.” (Heb. 3:1,2).
“And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a
servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
But Christ [was faithful] as a Son over His own house; whose
house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm
unto the end.” (Heb. 3:5,6).
“Wherefore in all things it behoved Him to be made like unto
His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things
pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.” (Heb.
2:17).
“Wherefore let them
that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to
him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.” (1Pet. 4:19).
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive
us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1Jn. 1:9).
“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the
first begotten of the dead, and the Prince of the kings of the earth. Unto Him
that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood,
And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father;
to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him,
and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail
because of Him. Even so, Amen.” (Rev. 1:5-7).
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.” (Rev. 19:11).
“These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful.” (Rev. 17:14).
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first
heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down
from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the
tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His
people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there
shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any
more pain: for the former things are passed away.
And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all
things new. And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
And He said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the
beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of
the water of life freely.
He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be
his God, and he shall be My son.” (Rev. 21:1-7).
“And He shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as
crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the
river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and
yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing
of the nations.
And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and
of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
And they shall see His face; and His name shall be in their
foreheads.
And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle,
neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall
reign for ever and ever.
And He said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true:
and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants
the things which must shortly be done.
Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the
sayings of the prophecy of this book.” (Rev. 22:1-7).
“Saying, I will declare thy name unto My brethren, in the
midst of the church will I sing praise unto Thee.
And again, I will put My trust in Him. And again, Behold I
and the children which God hath given Me.” (Heb. 2:12,13).
“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we
trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that
believe.” (1Tim. 4:9,10).
“But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we
should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in
whom we trust that He will yet deliver us.” (2Cor. 1:9,10).
“And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud Him,
all ye people.
And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and
He that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in Him shall the Gentiles trust.
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in
believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” (Rom.
15:11-13).
“In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings,
wherein thou hast transgressed against Me: for then I will take away out of the
midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty
because of My holy mountain.
I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor
people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD.
The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies;
neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed
and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.” (Zeph. 3:11-13).
“Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the
God of my salvation: my God will hear me.” (Mic. 7:7).
“Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive;
and let thy widows trust in Me.” (Jer. 49:11).
“When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the
wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he that putteth his
trust in Me shall possess the land, and shall inherit My holy mountain.” (Isa.
57:13).
“My righteousness is near; My salvation is gone forth, and Mine
arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon Me, and on Mine arm
shall they trust.” (Isa. 51:5).
“For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be
confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall
not be ashamed.
He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let
us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.
Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he that shall
condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them
up.
Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the
voice of His servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him
trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.” (Isa. 50:7-10).
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed
on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.
Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is
everlasting strength.” (Isa. 26:3,4).
“What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation?
That the LORD hath founded Zion, and the poor of His people shall trust in it.”
(Isa. 14:32).
“And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise Thee:
though Thou wast angry with me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou
comfortedst me.
Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be
afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; He also is become my
salvation.
Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of
salvation.” (Isa. 12:1-3).
“Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that
put their trust in Him.” (Prov. 30:5).
“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his
trust in the LORD shall be safe.” (Prov. 29:25).
“And therefore will the LORD wait, that He may be gracious
unto you, and therefore will He be exalted, that He may have mercy upon you:
for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for Him.” (Isa.
30:18).
“He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that
putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.” (Prov. 28:25).
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto
thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy
paths.” (Prov. 3:5,6).
“Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises
unto my God while I have any being.
Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in
whom there is no help.
His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that
very day his thoughts perish.
Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose
hope is in the LORD his God:
Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein
is: which keepeth truth for ever:
Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth
food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners:
The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth
them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous:
The LORD preserveth the strangers; He relieveth the
fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked He turneth upside down.
The LORD shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto
all generations. Praise ye the LORD.” (Ps. 146:1-10).
“A Psalm of David. Blessed be the LORD my strength, which
teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my
deliverer; my shield, and He in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.”
(Ps. 144:1,2).
“Cause me to hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in Thee
do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my
soul unto Thee.” (Ps. 143:8).
“But mine eyes are unto Thee, O GOD the Lord: in Thee is my
trust; leave not my soul destitute.” (Ps. 141:8).
“They that trust in the LORD shall be as
mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is
round about His people from henceforth even for ever.” (Ps. 125:1,2).
“So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth
me: for I trust in Thy word.” (Ps. 119:42).
“It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in
man.
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in
princes.” (Ps. 118:8,9).
“O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: He is their help and
their shield.
O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: He is their help and
their shield.
Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: He is their help
and their shield.
The LORD hath been mindful of us: He will bless us; He will
bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron.
He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.”
(Ps. 115:9-13).
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall
abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my
God; in Him will I trust.
Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,
and from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings
shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for
the arrow that flieth by day;
Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the
destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy
right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of
the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even
the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague
come nigh thy dwelling.
For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee
in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy
foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and
the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore will I
deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known My name.
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him: I will be with
him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him My
salvation.” (Ps. 91:1-16).
“But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my
trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all Thy works.” (Ps. 73:28).
“In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to
confusion.
Deliver me in Thy righteousness, and cause me to escape:
incline Thine ear unto me, and save me.” (Ps. 71:1,2).
“The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in
Him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.” (Ps. 64:10).
“Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the
land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and He shall give thee the
desires of thine heart.
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in Him; and He
shall bring it to pass.
And He shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and
thy judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him: fret not
thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who
bringeth wicked devices to pass.
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any
wise to do evil.” (Ps. 37:3-8).
“Now know I that the LORD saveth His anointed; He will hear
him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand.
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will
remember the name of the LORD our God.
They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and
stand upright.
Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.” (Ps. 20:6-9).
“To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of the
LORD, who spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD
delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And
he said, I will love Thee, O LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my
God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my
salvation, and my high tower.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so
shall I be saved from mine enemies.” (Ps. 18:1-3). He is worthy to be trusted.
“And they that know Thy name will put their trust in Thee:
for Thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.” (Ps. 9:10).
“Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way,
when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their
trust in Him.” (Ps. 2:12).
Faith is the substance of things hoped for. “Now faith is
the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Heb. 11:1).
“For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of
your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an
enduring substance.” (Heb. 10:34). Of all the goods that the Jewish Christians
had spoiled of themselves to give to the WoH [Paul?] in his need because in
heaven was a better and enduring substance, faith is the greatest of all
heavenly possessions to be hoped for.
In fact, it is the possession, the substance. No other
personal property or talent can compare or compete. “Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man
glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the
rich man glory in his riches:
But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he
understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness,
judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith
the LORD.” (Jer. 9:23,24). Faith makes us richer, wiser, more mentally sound, spiritually settled,
and physically energetic, and than anything this world can supply. “For
Thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. For by
Thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.” (Ps.
18:28,29).
Faith in Jesus the holy one of heaven is the fountain of
youth flowing from the mountain of Zion.
Every victory of the Bible champions was by faith in God
through His Son. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob
and his wives, Joseph, “and Judas …and …Thamar”, his prodigal daughter in law,
(Matt. 1:3), Moses and Aaron, Joshua, the judges, “Salmon [and] Rachab” the
harlot (Matt. 1:5), Boaz and Ruth the Gentile, the holy prophets and obedient
kings, every great adventure happened whenever God’s people trusted in Him.
Faith is the essence of true worship of the most holy God. “The
hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in
spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him
in spirit and in truth.” (Jn. 4:23,24). Worship without faith is worship with flattery.
“Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto
the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for He hath triumphed
gloriously: the horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea.
The LORD is my strength and song, and He is become my
salvation: He is my God, and I will prepare Him an habitation; my father's God,
and I will exalt Him.…
Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like Thee,
glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?” (Ex. 15:12,11).
“And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the
LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies;
because I rejoice in Thy salvation.
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside Thee:
neither is there any rock like our God.…
The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: He bringeth low, and
lifteth up.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the
beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit
the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and He hath
set the world upon them.
He will keep the feet of His saints, and the wicked shall be
silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out
of heaven shall He thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the
earth; and He shall give strength unto His king, and exalt the horn of His
anointed.” (1Sam. 2:1,7-10).
“And the angel [Gabriel] said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for
thou hast found favour with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring
forth a son, and shalt call His name JESUS.… For with God nothing shall be
impossible.
And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto
me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.…
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For He hath regarded the low estate of His handmaiden: for,
behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy
is His name.
And His mercy is on them that fear Him from generation to
generation.
He hath shewed strength with His arm; He hath scattered the
proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted
them of low degree.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He
hath sent empty away.
He hath holpen His servant Israel, in remembrance of His
mercy;
As He spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for
ever.” (Lk. 1:30,31,37,38,46-55).
“And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue
loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all
these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts,
saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with
him.
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and
prophesied, saying,
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for He hath visited and
redeemed His people,
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house
of His servant David;
As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, which have
been since the world began:
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand
of all that hate us;
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to
remember His holy covenant;
The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
That He would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of
the hand of our enemies might serve Him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of
our life.” (Lk. 1:64-75).
“It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab,
and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came
against Jehoshaphat to battle.
Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There
cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria;
and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi.
And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD,
and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the
LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.
And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and
Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court,
And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in
heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine
hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?
Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of
this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy
friend for ever?
And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary
therein for thy name, saying,
If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or
pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for
thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt
hear and help.
And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount
Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land
of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;
Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of
thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.
O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might
against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do:
but our eyes are upon thee.
And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones,
their wives, and their children.
Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah,
the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the
Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;
And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of
Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not
afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not
yours, but God's.
To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by
the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the
wilderness of Jeruel.
Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves,
stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and
Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the
LORD will be with you.
And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground:
and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD,
worshipping the LORD.
And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of
the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a
loud voice on high.
And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the
wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear
me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so
shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed
singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they
went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth
for ever.” (2Chron. 20:1-21).
“And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to
tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also,
and Samuel, and of the prophets:
Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness,
obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the
sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to
flight the armies of the aliens.
Women received their dead raised to life again: and others
were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better
resurrection:
And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea,
moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were
slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being
destitute, afflicted, tormented;
(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in
deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
And these all, having obtained a good report through faith,
received not the promise:
God having provided some better thing for us, that they
without us should not be made perfect.” (Heb. 11:32-40).
